The licence process requires motorists to purchase a temporary licence when their licence expires before they finish their renewal process. The renewal process requires an eye examination together with fingerprint identification and document authentication.
Government authorities also stress that no driving test is required for licence renewals but updated biometric checks and verification procedures are being introduced to prevent fraud.
Online Systems and Digital Upgrades
The South African government is increasing its digital services through systems like NaTIS which now enables users to book appointments and submit renewal requests online. The digital transformation process will decrease waiting periods and eliminate testing center lines while it boosts operational productivity. Drivers will receive notifications once their new licence cards are ready for collection.
Penalties for Late Renewals
People who do not renew their license before the deadline face three consequences which include paying fines and having their license suspended for a specific period and needing to pay additional administrative costs.
