SA School Holiday Update: Education Department Announces Closures From 25 January 2026

The Department of Basic Education in South Africa has released the official 2026 school holiday schedule which helps parents and students and teachers plan their upcoming academic year through its term and holiday break information. The new calendar system enables people to create better plans which include educational needs and personal obligations and travel requirements throughout the entire country.

Start of the 2026 Academic Year

The 2026 school year will start in mid-January when students return to school after their extended summer break. The entire nation will implement a single starting time as all schools will begin classes on the same day. Teachers must arrive at their schools before regular time to get ready for the upcoming term and finish their administrative tasks.

Term Structure and Key Dates

The academic year will once again follow a four-term structure. The first academic term starts in January and ends in March when students take their autumn break. Term 2 begins in April and ends in June, leading into the mid-year winter holiday. Term 3 starts in July and ends in September, after which students will have a brief spring vacation. The final term starts in October and continues until early December, when the school year officially ends.

Public Holidays and Special School Breaks

The school calendar includes multiple public holidays which provide students with extra vacation days throughout the academic year. The observance of Human Rights Day and Freedom Day and Workers Day and Youth Day and National Women Day serve as nationally recognized public holidays for this country. Schools schedule their special vacation periods to begin before public holidays so students and teachers can have extended time away from school.

End-of-Year Holiday Period

The academic year reaches its maximum duration through its extended break period which starts at the academic year conclusion. All schools throughout the country will suspend operations from early December until January 2027 which creates an extended summer holiday period. This time period functions as a standard holiday travel period when families participate in holiday celebrations before their school year begins.

Why the Calendar Matters for Families

The complete holiday calendar lets parents and guardians plan their childcare needs along with their work schedule and family trips. Schools can use this information to schedule their assessment tests and extracurricular programs and academic support activities without facing operational challenges.

Planning Ahead for 2026

The 2026 school holiday calendar has been established which allows families and educators to identify essential dates that they need to prepare for. Students who plan their activities in advance will experience better transitions between school terms while they maintain their study and rest needs throughout the entire academic year.
