WitsandSituated 70 Km South West of Postmasburg lies one of the Northern Capes most fascinating Nature Reserves. Here you will find a 100-metre high tongue of brilliant white sand dunes approximately 9km long and 2 km wide. This white sands vividly contrasts with the surrounding red Kalahari sands, green thorn trees and the misty blue of the Langeberg mountains. The white sand is situated above a body of underground water which has leached out the red iron oxide coating of the sand grains, leaving the bleached pure white sand. On the southerly sides of the dunes you will experience the most awesome feeling in your life. Here the roaring sands will entertain you. As you move about on the dune, it will groan because of your weight. If you just move your fingers through the sand, a soft muted sound can be heard. This phenomena is caused by the dry air, uniform sand grains and the lack of the iron oxide coating. There are accommodation for 142 overnight visitors in 10 well equipped chalets, a group camp and camping sites. The reserve is further accessible to hikers as well as by a network of tourist roads for the less energetic. In the rest camp there are also two swimming pools in which you can cool off after your walk through the park. This Nature Reserve is a an absolute paradise for hikers, birdwatchers, photographers and all who enjoy the great outdoors. Various hiking trails run through the reserve and there are even concealed hideouts close to waterholes from where birds can be viewed without them even knowing you are there. |
