Sutherland

Sutherland, together with WIlliston and Fraserburg, forms part of the Karoo Hoogland Municapal Region.

Known as the coldest place in South Africa, Sutherland is also world famous for its clear night skies and South Africa'ns Largest Telescope, which is currently under construction at the Sutherland Observatory.

The climate of Sutherland is very similar to that of the Netherlands, and because of this it is the ideal habitat for growing tulips.

In winter it often snows in Sutherland, changing the landscape into a fairytale white - hard to believe it is situated in the sunny South Africa.
