Modder RiverSituated on the N12 approximately 35 km south of Kimberley, Modder River played an important role in the Anglo Boer War. During 1882, Modder River served as a quarantine station to keep the dreaded disease of smallpox away from Kimberley. Travellers enroute to Kimberley had either to produce a valid certification of vaccination or be vaccinated at the station. Modder River was also the scene of a battle during the Anglo-Boer War with the Boers taking up the defensive in the deep shaded banks of the river. At the build-up to the Battle of Magersfontein, Modderriver was the main British camp under command of Lord Methuen. It is from here that the attack on Magersfontein was launched. Today a British blockhouse can still be seen near the railroad. |
