DelportshoopDelportshoop, a small digger'ns town nestled in the confluence of the Harts and Vaal Rivers, is situated at the foot of the Ghaap Plato. The city of Kimberley, with its world-renowned Big Hole is merely a 45 minutes'n drive away - approx. 60 km. The city is air-linked to all the major South African international airports. Delportshoop was officially proclamated on 28 November 1871. It became known as an important centre in the boom days of the alluvial diamond diggings along the two meandering rivers. We are well known for our informal settlements, formal agricultural and game developments, as well as historical settlements such as Sydney-on-Vaal and Longlands. Closely situated to our town in Ulco - a proud mine settlement and one of the biggest cement mines and factories in the Southern Hemisphere. Its fine quality products built the well-known Katze Dam in Lesotho. Vaal-Gamagara, which obtains and purifies water from the Vaal River, pumps the water into a 1700 km long water pipe line to the North Western Cape to as far as Van Zyls Rus in the Kalahari Desert. After you have visited the Big Hole in Kimberley, we cordially invite you to visit us. Come and treat yourself to a drive through the Vaalbos National Park or to visit a traditional and/or modern diamond digging site (and touch a rough diamond!). Take a drive to one of our quest farms, or what about a cruise, commencing at Wards Valley, up and down the Vaal River. What about a stay over at the historic Borrelskopje, the Diamond Guest House, a guest farm or in Vaalbos National Park and experience the African starry nights, picturesque sunsets, the silence, as well as the incomparable and unparalleled hospitality of the Griqualand West? From Delportshoop you can easily link up to towns such as Douglas, Jan Kempdorp, Daniëlskuil, Kuruman, Upington and cities such as Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban, or countries like Namibia and Botswana. For detailed information, consult our brochure and the details given on the individual ensuing web pages (currently still under construction, but soon to follow). |
