Upington

Adventures   Places to stay

Upington, Capital city of the Green Kalahari is situated on the banks of the Orange River. They call this area the Green Kalahari because, in stark contrast to the surrounding areas, a narrow band of lush green follows the flow of the mighty Orange River. This is grape country. Here most of the raisins of South Africa are produced. Some of the grapes are converted into excellent wines. No visit to Upington is complete without you tasting at least one of the locally produced wines. You will be hooked on it for ever.

Upington is also the gateway to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. A visit to the park is an absolute must if you wish to experience Africa as it was years ago before the human race spoiled it. This unspoiled wilderness will bring you the opportunity to experience viewing game at close range, looking up at the night sky to see how many stars there really are and hearing the mighty roar of the Kalahari Lion close to camp. This park covers almost a million hectares of red sand dunes with sparse vegetation. Here you will find fifty eight mammal species, 55 reptiles, countless insect species and 260 species of bird of which at least 20 are raptors. Here you will find many antelope species, the black manned Kalahari Lion, cheetah and leopard roaming the plains.

Close to Upington is the Augrabies Waterfall. Here the Orange River plummets down the Augrabies gorge.

Upington enjoys a summer rainfall and a very hot climate. This is an ideal winter holiday resort.

Upington have plenty to offer the visitor. It is also an ideal stop over place for those who are enroute from other parts of the country to Namibia. It offers many places to stay and excellent food in one of its many restaurants.
