Nooitgedacht
Did you know that some parts of the Northern Cape were once covered in ice? Nooitgedacht houses the remnants of this period in the history of South Africa which dates back to 250 to 300 million years ago. At Nooitgedacht, situated between Kimberley and Barkly West, you will find what is commonly known as Glacial Pavings. The striations in large rock banks running north-east and south-west, were caused by debris enclosed in the base of the slowly moving ice sheets. The pavements are covered with numerous engravings, mostly abstract forms done by San (Bushmen) hunter gatherers many years ago. There is also a small on-site interpretive centre which provides details of the glacial era.
