4x4 Routes in the Northern CapeAre you interested in experiencing Africa at its best? Then it is a must to explore the country with a four wheel drive vehicle that will take you to the outer limits. The off road trails presented here guarantees you of an exhilarating experience that you will never forget. The Richtersveld National Park:Before entering the park, you must obtain admission and overnight permits from the park office at Sendelingsdrift. If you plan to overnight, you will have to arrive before 4 pm to allow you enough time to reach the camping site before dark. The park have three guest cottages who can house 10, 8 and 4 people respectively. The park is not accessible by sedan vehicles. This park, situated in the north western corner of the Northern Cape, is the only mountain desert park in southern Africa and is a photographers dream. Here you will find an abundance of succulent plants which includes the halfmens (half human) and the quiver tree that are endemic to this area. The 4x4 enthusiast will get enough exercise in their driving skills in this park when they tackle the various sandy or rocky trails. It is recommended that the trails be tackled preferably in convoy due to the various hazards that the inhospitable terrain on the mountain passes present. This is an area where water is scarce and a breakdown could leave you in real danger. Their are various routes through the park which are graded from easy to very difficult and with distances that vary from about 240 km to as much as 760 km. It will take you anything from 2 to 5 days to complete these routes. The West Coast 4x4 Trail:If you are into driving in sand, then this pleasant drive will test all your sand driving skills. This route follows the coastline from Dwarskersbos to Lambert'ns Bay, Groenriviermond, Hondeklipbaai and ends in Port Nolloth. This route, which is rated moderate to difficult, offers fabulous scenery and is definitely a must visit area in the Northern Cape. It will take you 6 days to complete the total distance of 650 km. Permission must be obtained from De Beers at Kleinzee if you intent to do this trail without a guide. |
